MADISON, Wis. -- The son of the inventor of the skid steer brought an original three-wheeled prototype of the machine to Bobcat of Madison Tuesday.

The three-wheeled loader was invented in 1957 to help a turkey farmer move manure around barns. At the time, standard loader tractors were too big to maneuver and to heavy to operate on the second floor of barns, leading to the creation of the skid steer.

Today, skid steers are common sights from construction sites to farms and more.

"In 2003 there was 500,000, in 2008 here was 750,000, in 2014 -- somewhere around there -- that reached a million, and last I know for sure is November 20... it was around 1.25 million," Joe Keller, the son of inventor Louis Keller, said.

The brothers who invented the first compact loader have been selected as inductees for the National Inventors Hall of Fame. The prototype machine that stopped in Madison is on its way to be displayed for a year to honor Louis Keller and his brother.
